St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, corner of Broughton Street, George Street & Sturt Street, was completed in 1834, and in 1887, after the opening of the new St. John's Roman Catholic Church at the corner of Lindesay Street & Cordeaux Street, it was converted to St. Patrick's Convent for the Good Samaritan Sisters and operated as a girls school (both boarding and day) until 1970.
